My name is David Close and I'm the head instructor at Close Combat Martial Arts. I have been practising various styles of martial arts since childhood and decided to pursue a career as an instructor back in 2016, to help people learn how to defend themselves, get fit, build self-esteem, overcome fears and develop skills.

I attended Freestyle Combat Karate as a child into my teens and competed at the national level, later on in life in 2014 I trained and developed skills in close quarters combat at KAPAP & Krav Maga where I started to help to teach the class and at that point was considering becoming an instructor. More recently I took up Kickboxing to keep my fitness level high and joined a family Taekwondo club with my own children, where I helped the instructors teach for a brief time, I joined Gracie University and studied the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to add to my ground game. I then went on to train with the National Federation for Personal Safety (NFPS) where I completed a BTEC level 3 Advanced Award in Self Defence Instruction in October 2016.

Close Combat Martial Arts club was founded and opened its doors for the first time on the 10th February 2017. Since then I have developed my own unique, graded syllabus based on different martial arts styles, I have licences and insurance to teach Freestyle Kickboxing, Martial Arts Based Boxing, & we also practise the basics of submission grappling taken from the Gracie Combatives BJJ syllabus, which I am licensed and insured to teach under a separate MMA licence, although we teach and practice these martial arts styles separately, and we are not alligned with any MMA organisation, nor do we compete in any MMA events at present, until such time as they have Sport England recognition.

A few of my students are keen to compete and I have successfully helped people train for amateur Boxing and Kickboxing inter-club competitions and larger events, and we are moving towards that more in the future. Currently, at our gym, we regularly spar in Boxing and Kickboxing and also have no-gi BJJ rolling session.

Since opening, we have joined the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association in 2020, and have completed the BMABA level 1&2 Coaching Qualifications and a Black Belt Equivalency to be licensed and insured to teach. We have also had our multi combat sports syllabus officially licensed and approved, and joined the National Grading Integrity Scheme. We also hold the BMABA Club Colours Award for maintaining the highest possible vetting standards in the industry, which includes the Safeguarding Code In Martial Arts (SCIMA).
